4.3 Reduce data transfer with compression

Hosting, Infrastructure, and Systems

Compress server responses and media files to reduce bandwidth, storage use, and delivery overhead while balancing processing costs.

Success Criteria

  • Server-side compression:
Use server-side compression settings and tools to compress commonly used file types when appropriate. Ensure that compression reduces energy consumption, minimizes load times, saves bandwidth, and improves overall performance. Do not apply additional compression to files that are already appropriately sized for upload.
  • Media compression:
Compress media files such as images, video, and audio before uploading anywhere to reduce storage and transfer requirements.
